The Golden Dome is a multi-layer missile defense system for the United States. It can detect and destroy various foreign threats, including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, before they launch or during their flight. The system employs a global constellation of satellites equipped with both sensors and space-based interceptors.
What are Space Based Interceptors?
A space based interceptor, or SBI, is an effector launched from orbit to intercept ballistic or hypersonic missiles.
Why are hypersonic missiles a threat?
Hypersonic missiles, which can carry nuclear warheads, are fast (> Mach 5) missiles that maneuver unpredictably. The current US missile defense systems were not designed to defend against hypersonic weapons. This is a current vulnerability in the US’s defensive capabilities.
